Perfectionism; Illusion or Reason?

We have all at least once in our lives heard, ‘Lost opportunities never return.’ Well, it’s the truth! The opportunity which we once miss may never come back again. How many of you have felt that you should not take part in anything until you are ready for it? In this modern world full of technology and fast-paced lives, people have made an environment for themselves which requires them to be good enough in everything before then can take part or express themselves to the world. For example, if someone loves writing, he or she shall be good enough in it before showing it to others. The motive of doing this? It’s admiration of wrong sorts and perfectionism.
Everyone is so drowned in being the best that they forget the actual reason they are doing it. There is so much competition everywhere in every field nowadays that people want to be nothing less than the best. And for achieving this, they are ready to do anything. But amidst all this, they forget the true motive of trying something shall be to learn and gain knowledge, not to showcase. But most people have already forgotten this quite some time back! They make themselves feel they are not good enough, as per other’s expectations, and will be made fun of. Because of this constant nagging fear, most people don’t even try to pursue their dreams and later end up being lost in the crowd. As people grow older, they gain experience but lose creativity, which is accompanied by the words of the society. This often ends up with the person having insecurities about the way he or she is and destroys the desire to do something different.
Most people wish to get accepted by the society. For this, they do everything they can to ‘fit in’ the crowd and gain the love of people around them. But can we can ask a sparrow to swim in the deep seas? No! Absolutely not! Then how can people expect others to do ‘what is right’ and ‘fit in’? Just by telling someone that he or she is not good enough for something, or teaching children that they should not question everything, people are killing the individuality of others. Everyone is unique in their own way. Just because someone thinks differently doesn’t mean that he or she is wrong. This is where the problem arises. Even when both the people are right, one will be told that he or she is wrong and this will lead up to the growth of insecurities in that person’s mind. The next time that person receives any opportunity to portray themselves, they will think much before participating because of this certain fear of criticism.
So, to convince himself that he is taking the right decision, that person will make the excuse of perfectionism. This is happening everywhere around us. People make excuses such as not having adequate time or not being ready for such a thing. But excuses don’t get us anywhere in life. If we wait till we are ready, it will leave us waiting forever. No person is ever prepared for something new. They just keep on learning things on their way. So, by telling ourselves that we are not ready yet and that we need more practice will not do us any good. When we see an opportunity, we need to go grab it. Stop assuming that you are not good enough or that you won’t be able to do it. Even if you fail, you won’t be left with nothing, for you will have experience regarding what NOT to do the next time and a better understanding of that problem.
Whenever you see any opportunity, go for it. Don’t think what others will say, don’t ponder over if you are ready for it or not, don’t guess what will happen if you fail and don’t think everyone will make fun of you. This is your life and you should be happy the way you are. You need not prove yourself to anyone, nor do you need to impress a giant crowd of people to become successful. Focus on yourself and go for it. You will learn many new things on the way. Whenever you see any opportunity to go on that stage, take it; whenever you see any opportunity to stand out of the crowd, take it. You are your own person and you need not follow anybody else’s opinion. So don’t be afraid of taking up opportunities. Get up, raise your hand and take a stand in the world. This will make you a better version of yourself, and you will know how to prepare yourself better the next time. So never hesitate to take on challenges because they level you up and make you realize your worth and potential. They will help you take your stand better in the corporate world.
